The 1996 Formula One season was not one that placed great stress on the compilers of F1 statistics. Most of the races were fairly straight forward, with few being shortened. Nor were there many driver changes throughout the season - in fact, compared to recent past seasons, 1996 was one of the quietest for this.
Some of the figures below have been presented before on occasion, others have been regular through the season, while a few are new. One major change from the regular tables during the season is that the 1996 tables are sorted in alphabetical order; this solves any question of what figures to use as the basis for the sorting - pick your own, to prove your own point, if you like.
Based on the original concept by the late John Taylor in Autocourse, the SuperGrid/Race figures were developed mainly out of personal interest and are maintained mainly for that reason. Over the years, and quite a number of software packages, the SuperStuff collection has grown as more information becomes available more readily and more quickly. Perhaps it might now be around saturation point.
Most of the figures in the 1996 SuperGrid should be fairly obvious. The "Avg Time" figures are the average of the grid times for that driver, for the qualifying sessions in which he participated.
The "Avg % Off Pole" is a new, experimental, figure. Based on the 107% ruling, this figure averages each drivers' percentage of the pole time. So, if a driver got pole in one race and was at 102% in the next race, the figure here would be 101%. Naturally, the driver who set the most pole times in the season (Hill) has the figure nearest to 100%.
Drivers whose qualifying time was disallowed have been credited with that disallowed time - the question of allocating another time is impossible to resolve fairly - but have been "positioned" in their grid position. Drivers who had to start from the back of the grid or from pit lane have been credited with the position based on their grid time.
Drivers who did not participate in all 16 qualifying sessions are marked with an aster ("*"). Strictly speaking, these drivers do not qualify for the SuperGrid.

Again, most of the figures for the 1996 SuperRace should be fairly obvious.
Drivers who were disqualified from a race have been credited with laps and race time, but have been "placed" at the end of the field. (This may change in future SuperRace figures.)
"Racing Time", a new figure, is the total time that each driver officially spent racing. It should be remembered that the official times are based on the completion of each lap. A curiosity note: the driver who spent the most time racing during 1996 (Villeneuve), "worked" for just over 24 hours during the entire season - his hourly rate would be interesting.
The "KPH" figure is based on distance completed divided by the racing time.

Presenting figures on teams is something that seems fraught with difficulties, mainly due to establishing some basis of equity. I have been increasingly concerned about these figures and present here just a few figures to satisfy any cursory interest - many more, of very dubious value, are available upon request.

These final tables give the top 20 drivers in each category taken from 1950 through to the end of the 1996 season. Drivers who were active in the 1996 season are marked with an aster ("*"). Where two categories are in one table, the top 20 drivers for each category have been included, with sorting on the first set of figures. Three points to remember. First, from 1950 through to 1960, the Indianapolis 500 was counted as a Grand Prix. That should explain the presence in these tables of some names not usually associated with GP. Second, as with all GP statistics, compilers disagree on a number of matters - the most infamous being "What does a driver have to do to be credited with a race? Take the grid? Take the first grid? Move off at the start of the race? Be on the false (ie. pre-warm-up lap) grid?" For this reason, there are usually differences in published figures. Third, the final table, showing kilometres and laps led, only shows these figures from 1957 onwards.
