The CART score system must be one of the most twisted methods in autoracing. And yet, it awards many more drivers than Formula One does and is particularly more rewarding for the teams at the back end of the grid, who can score points for the mere fact that they finish within the top 12 of the race. The exact system of scoring in CART is: 1st = 20 points; 2nd = 16; 3rd = 14; 4th = 12; 5th = 10; 6th = 8; 7th = 6; 8th = 5; 9th = 4; 10th = 3; 11th = 2; 12th = 1. In addition, the Pole sitter gets a point and the driver with most laps lead in the race also gets a point. Implementing this points system on the F1 World Championship this year shows that the results are not that different at the top of the table. But at the bottom - there are some surprises, notably Shinji Nakano who jumps into 15th position and his team Minardi, who is not only not the last of the pack, but is even one position ahead of Prost, a team with one FIA World Championship point. |
