1999 SuperStats | |
San Marino GP Edition. Compilation by Rory Gordon, Australia |
The Superstats is an on-going project that attempts to classify various performances throughout an F1 season by, generally, averaging each race's performance, in several categories, over the entire season.
Conceived as the SuperGrid by the late John Taylor for Autocourse, I started my own compilations when Taylor died. Originally, the SuperStats - as the project was to become - was developed purely for my own interest. This has not changed, and the day I get bored with the SuperStats, they will stop. All figures used in the SuperStats are based on the official FIA timing sheets and, where necessary, those sheets are deemed to be the final authority.
Already this season, there are four drivers (Luca Badoer, Mika Salo, Stephan Sarrazin and Ricardo Zonta) with an asterisk beside their names to denote that they have not participated in every race. All such drivers appear in the "second division" of the SuperGrid, separated from the main field to clearly show their advantage/disadvantage. SuperGrid The first SuperGrid of the season shows what most F1 fans would probably know instinctively anyway - the two McLarens are on top with Michael Schumacher close behind. The claims from the Stewart team that they may soon be one of the top teams does not appear to be too far from the mark. Even the Stewart "new boy", Herbert, seems to be performing well. Down the bottom of the "grid", it would seem that the Arrows and Minardi teams are in for a bleak season. The table is sorted on times.

The first SuperRace indicates that 1999 may finally, at long last, be the season for Ferrari, with both Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine - the latter only just - leading the race. Sorted on laps completed, the juxtaposition of laps completed against position clearly indicates that it just isn't necessarily good enough to finish a race, it's position that counts. Mika Hakkinen is well down the order, but is currently third in the Championship; while Takagi is sixth in the SuperRace, and without points in the Championship. The extra asterisks against "Avg. Best Lap" shows those drivers who have not set a fastest lap at every race so far this season (Jean Alesi, Johnny Herbert and Damon Hill at Australia, and Jarno Trulli and Jacques Villeneuve at San Marino). Naturally, a driver must complete at least one lap in a race to set a fastest lap time in that race.
