Alonso Not Making his Mark?

Friday August 3rd, 2001

Fernando AlonsoRelationships between Formula One drivers may never be that close, but Williams's Ralf Schumacher has admitted that he does not know what Minardi's Fernando Alonso looks like.

Schumacher joined Formula One with Jordan in 1997, and having always been in competitive teams he seems to have little knowledge of the up and coming youngsters like Alonso.

"I wouldn't even recognise him because I haven't really seen him yet and I haven't really watched what he is doing," said Schumacher of Alonso.

Spaniard Alonso, 20, is in his first season in the sport and has regularly beaten teammate Tarso Marques so far this season. However, Schumacher says he reserves judgement on Alonso as he claims Marques, who has raced 23 times in Formula One, is not an ideal comparison.

"I saw he was always quicker than Tarso Marques but then, not to be unfair to Tarso, you wouldn't consider him as one of the best options to learn from or to be looked at," said Schumacher.
