Anyone planning a last minute trip to the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend might as well forget it as hotels in and around the Hungarian capital have been fully booked up for at least a week, hotel chain officials said.
"All our Budapest hotels are fully booked and the demand extends to a 100 kilometre radius around the race track," Jozsef Szabo, sales director for one of Hungary's largest chains, Hunguest Hotels, told Reuters.
"Demand is so strong that we don't need to offer any discount and we could even afford to ask for advance payments on all bookings for this weekend," he said. Sandor Betegh, CEO of hotel group Danubius said that 96 percent of their rooms had been booked by last week.
Szabo also said that while in the past excess demand was usually chanelled towards the Lake Balaton holiday resort - within reach of the Hungaroring racetrack - it had lately spread to the north-eastern Matra mountains. Organisers expect more than 200,000 Formula One fans to attend the race, which could see Michael Schumacher clinch his fourth World Championship.
They also expect ticket and other direct sales of up to 3.4 billion forints ($12.32 million), up from last year's 2.7 billion.
