Engine suppliers Honda revealed on Thursday that they have no contract with promising Japanese driver Takuma Sato, despite speculation to the contrary.
Recent reports suggested that Honda had a contract with Sato and were keen for the British Formula Three Championship leader to fill the seat vacated by Heinz-Harald Frentzen at Jordan.
"He is a Japanese driver and we like him very much," Honda's technical director Kazutoshi Nishisawa said. "We always support drivers who have speed. We hope he does very well this year, but he does not have a contract with Honda. He only has a testing contract with BAR."
Jordan and British American Racing, who Sato is a test driver for, are both supplied with 'works' Honda engines for the 2001 season.
