Hungary Detains Prostitutes Near F1 Track

Saturday August 18th, 2001

Hungarian police detained at least 19 women for illegal prostitution on Friday and Saturday near the Formula One motor racing track in the outskirts of Budapest, the local news agency MTI said.

The Hungarian Grand Prix takes place on the circuit on Sunday with Ferrari's Michael Schumacher in pole position. Saturday's practice sessions attracted big crowds. The race is one of the largest events in the Hungarian tourist and sporting season and draws many thousands of visitors from abroad, mainly from Germany and Austria.

Mogyorod village, where the Hungaroring track is located, caused public uproar last year when it allowed a "sex village" during the race, complete with huts, toilets and a peep-show. Village officials said there would be no repeat this year.

However, prostitutes were quoted in the press as saying they would make their own arrangements. Prostitution is legal in Hungary, but only in red light areas designated by local municipalities. No such zone had been authorised by the race track.
