Italian Chefs Cook Up Ferrari Feast

Monday August 20th, 2001

Dedicated bakers from the central Italian town of Orentano have shown their true love for Ferrari when they unveiled an entire racing car that's ready to eat.

Constructed of 40,000 cream pies and decorated with almond paste, custard cream and chocolate, the five-yards-long confectionery version of Michael Schumacher's winning Formula One racing car was created by 50 pastry chefs.

The bakers were putting the final, enticing touches to the mega-cake on Sunday as the German Schumacher raced to his fourth World Championship at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The mayor of Maranello, the central Italian town near Bologna where Ferrari is based, was scheduled to open festivities at midnight, when fans were able to dig in and find out what it really tastes like to be a Ferrari champion.
