Volkswagen Tipped for F1 Entry

Monday August 20th, 2001

According to a report in the British newspaper The Times, Europe's biggest carmakers Volkswagen could be ready to launch a bid to join Formula One.

The Times reported on Monday that Volkswagen could start a campaign to get into Grand Prix racing if Bernd Pischetsrieder is, as expected, unveiled as Volkswagen's new chairman in November.

Volkswagen's current chairman Ferdinand Piech has reportedly resisted calls to join Formula One, but Pischetsrieder is a racing fan and friend of Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone.

A Volkswagen source is quoted in the report as saying: "The company has some of the best auto engineers in the world. While they are working on innovations for the Passat or the Golf or the Beetle, I am sure they are all itching to have a go at making an F1 car."

The report suggested that an Formula One prototype car is already being worked on by Volkswagen.
