European Minardi team chief Paul Stoddart has revealed that he almost pipped Arrows to a Cosworth engine deal for next year.
Arrows announced they will use Cosworth engines from the 2002 season at last month's German Grand Prix. But Stoddart, who is still to confirm his team's engine for next year, said he almost signed a deal with Cosworth.
"I think the Cosworth engine is one of the best in the pitlane and that was my first choice," said Stoddart. "At the German Grand Prix I was virtually a hair's breadth away from signing the piece of paper, in fact we almost did sign it."
Stoddart has predicted that Arrows, under the guidance of Tom Walkinshaw, will now be primed to challenge for podium finishes and capable of beating fellow Cosworth customers Jaguar.
"I think Tom would be very disappointed if they didn't get on the podium next season," he added. "He has gone for a much more comprehensive package. It's not just the engine with Tom. He's paid a lot more money than I was going to pay and he'll get the results because of that.
"In hindsight it may prove that I should have made a decision for the Cosworth engine because Tom has now got that."
Stoddart said recently he has four options for an engine next season and expects to make an announcement on that in the next two weeks.
