McLaren Technician Fired after Plane Incident

Tuesday December 4th, 2001

The McLaren team have reportedly sacked one of their technicians after an incident on a packed Thai Airlines flight. Briton Vince Mallett, 30, reportedly drunk whisky and slapped fellow passengers on a flight from Bangkok to London.

His reported antics worried passengers and forced the pilot of the plane to dump £20,000 worth of fuel before Mallett was restrained and handcuffed by cabin crew. On his arrival in London, Mallett was arrested and only released after he confirmed in writing that he would pay for the dumped fuel, according to a report in the Daily Star newspaper.

A McLaren spokeswoman was quoted in the report as saying: "After looking into the matter thoroughly, McLaren decided to terminate Mr Mallett's contract with the company with immediate effect."

Mallett was pictured in the British newspaper pulling faces, under the headline 'The £20,000 Mug'.
