World rally chief David Richards has emerged as the favourite to replace Craig Pollock at the British American Racing team after the Scot announced he was stepping down on Monday.
Richards, 49, has had a long and successful career in the World Rally Championship, but has been involved in Formula One once before. The Briton, who recently admitted he was standing back from his post as rally boss, was chief executive of the Benetton Formula One team from 1997 until a falling-out with the Benetton family caused him to quit a year later.
Since then he has concentrated on marketing the World Rally Championship, for which he brought the rights from F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone. The British American Racing team said on Monday they will announce the name of Pollock's replacement on Tuesday, when they will unveil their 2002 car.
