McLaren-Mercedes are willing to risk reliability and plan to take radical measures, in order to leapfrog the opposition in the upcoming 2001 season.
The Daily Grapevine has learned that in a recent conversation with a colleague, McLaren's technical director Adrian Newey said: "We have really pushed the boat out with our new car. We may have reliability problems in the first part of the season but we should be fast toward the end."
The new MP4/16 will be unveiled on February 7th at the Valencia circuit and is said to be be very different from its predecessor.
Mercedes-Benz and Ilmor are also thought to have gone for broke with its new engine, which - according to speculation - could break the 20,000 rpm mark for the first time.
McLaren are currently testing behind closed doors at the Jerez circuit in Spain, where the team is rumoured to be working on the new car.
