Christijan Albers' name has been added to European Minardi's shortlist of contenders for the second drive alongside Fernando Alonso in 2001.
Minardi will have talented Alonso behind the wheel, but are looking at several drivers to fill the second seat. Minardi chief Paul Stoddart is thought to be keen on the Albers to create his A-team.
Dutchman Albers, who raced for Stoddart's European Racing F3000 team last year, has revealed he may be in line for a surprise promotion.
"I was very surprised that Stoddart and Mainwaring (Rupert, team manager of Minardi) told me that I was on their list for a drive alongside Alonso," said Albers.
"I don't know who the other people are, but the fact that I am in the picture is spectacular."
Gianni Morbidelli is tipped as the favourite for the Minardi seat, but Stoddart said that the team are undergoing final discussions with five drivers. They hope to have chosen their second driver by the end of the week.
