Bernie Leads the Way in British Money Stakes

Monday February 19th, 2001

Bernie Ecclestone is the richest sports personality in Britain, according to a survey by a British newspaper.

Ecclestone, the man behind Formula One, amounted £624 million (pounds) in earnings during 2000, according to the Sunday Mirror. Most of the sum is believed to come from the sale of 50 per cent of SLEC, the family trust which holds the broadcasting rights for the sport.

Eddie Irvine was the top earning driver from the United Kingdom with a £7.8 million haul, while British American Racing's Adrian Reynard topped the list for team management claiming a £4.427 million packet for his efforts.

Formula One new-boy Jenson Button did not quite hit the heights of his fellow drivers, but will be more than happy to have walked away with £3 million during his first season in Formula One.
