With less than two months before the new Formula One season begins, the struggling Minardi team could be saved by French manufacturer Mecachrome, according to the Italian press.
The small Italian outfit's situation has been critical since they lost their main sponsor Telefonica and the deal with PSN collapsed last month.
Still without an engine deal or drivers for the upcoming season, Minardi is looking for an investor to keep the team alive, and according to the reports in the Gazzeta Dello Sport newspaper, Mecachrome is to buy the majority share, owned by Gabrielle Rumi.
Mecachrome, who is best know for having supplied Renault-based engines to the Williams and the Benetton teams during the 1998 season, is also said to be interested in Gian Carlo Minardi's share.
These rumours started in mid-December and an official announcement is expected soon.
