World Champion Michael Schumacher received the World Sports Award in the motorsports category in a ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall in England.
The World Sports Awards, created in 1999, exist firstly to organise the voting for the awards, and secondly to channel all donations into charitable projects meeting the Foundation's objectives.
Sports journalists from all over the world nominate five sportsmen and women from each category from an original short list of 260 athletes, according to a points system. The results are announced to the press after the nomination meeting and then handed over to the jury, who decides the winners.
Schumacher, 2000 Formula One World Champion, received 47,72% of the votes, while McLaren rival Mika Hakkinen was second with 37,99%. 500cc Motorcycling World Champion Kenny Roberts Jr. was third with 6,59%.
Schumacher's brother Ralf picked up the award in the name of Michael, who was unable to attend the ceremony.
