F1 Circuit to Hold CART Race

Friday January 19th, 2001

The Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Montreal, Canada, will hold a round of the American CART series in 2002, it was announced today, becoming the first track to hold CART and Formula One events during a single season.

The 2.74-mile track on Ile Notre-Dame has sealed a five-year deal with CART, becoming the third CART event to be held in Canada, together with Toronto and Vancouver.

The announcement means that, for the first time, Formula One and CART will compete in the same circuit in the same year, finally allowing a direct comparison between the cars competing in each championship.

The FIA, however, is expected to demand layout changes to the track for each race.
