Johnny Herbert is a strong contender for a seat with Bentley when they return to Le Mans later this year.
Bentley confirmed its return to the famous French race last month, entering two cars in the classic event. The team has already announced the signing of Britons Andy Wallace and James Weaver and American Butch Leitzinger.
A spokesperson for Bentley admitted that Herbert is among several drivers the team is talking to, including fellow Briton and former Formula One driver Mark Blundell. However, the team is in no hurry to sign a driver at this stage.
"It's unlikely that we would take both Herbert and Blundell," said a source
within the team. "But they are in the group to whom we are talking and we are
not in a rush to sign anyone."
Herbert retired from Formula One last year, and was hoping to find a seat in the American CART series. However, it seems unlikely this will now occur. Blundell recently lost his drive with PacWest in the CART series. Both Herbert and Blundell are previous winners of the Le Mans 24 hour endurance classic.
