Anthony Garotinho, Governor of the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, has admitted his desire to promote the return of the Formula One Grand Prix to the Nelson Piquet/Jacarepagua circuit.
Shortly after securing the CART race for the 2001 season, Garotinho confessed he is determined to bring Formula One back to Rio, after an absence of more than eleven years.
"It was always a dream to bring Formula One back, which was a great loss for the state", Garotinho said. "We have to see what we can do, but my intention is to get the GP back."
The Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo, which currently hosts the Brazilian Grand Prix, recently extended his deal for five more years.
The last time a Formula One Grand Prix was held at Jacarepagua was in 1989, and the race was won by Nigel Mansell at the wheel of a Ferrari.
