Former Formula One World Champion Alan Jones will be selling his trophies and other memorabilias at the end of this month, in a special auction to be held in Melbourne.
The Australian, who won the World Championship with Williams in 1980, will sell fifty items, including 14 Grand Prix trophies - two of which belonged to his father Stan, who won the 1954 New Zealand GP and the 1959 Australian GP.
Auction house Christie's, which will hold the charity auction in Melbourne on July 31, estimated yesterday that the Jones collection could make more than $300,000.
Jones himself said yesterday that the decision to sell all these special belongings was down to practical reasons and not lack of funds. "I've never been one of those blokes who has his trophies all over the house," he told the Herald Sun. "It's always just been in boxes. We've moved to a smaller house at Main Beach on the Gold Coast and it's simply too much."
The Jones collection of memorabilias - including racing suits, boots, and special artwork, - as well as his trophy collection, will be on display prior to the auction, at Christie's in Darling St, South Yarra, from July 26th.
