Formula Three driver Derek Hayes has joined the flock of young drivers who are looking for a leap into the Big League, saying this weekend's F3 race is the most important of his career.
Hayes, who was Jenson Button's teammate in 1998 while the two raced in Formula
Ford, is participating in a non-Championship race tomorrow at Silverstone. The race, he says, is his most important opportunity to make ties with the Formula One teams, who are present at Silverstone in full force for the British Grand Prix.
"I'm the only person in the top four [of the F3 Championship] who hasn't been involved in Formula One," Hayes said, referring, among others, to BAR's test driver and F3 Championship leader Takuma Sato, as well as James Courtney, who has recently begun testing for Jaguar Racing.
"This is definitely the most important race of my career," Hayes, who won his first F3 race at Brands Hatch last weekend, explained. "Everyone wants to win this one and everybody is out there to see if they can impress. I'll try and drive even faster than I would normally.
"It's an important weekend. I may be talking to some Formula One teams over the weekend, but will see how it goes."
