Former world champion Nigel Mansell has been elected Britain's best ever racing driver by the British public in a survey carried out by insurance company Green Flag.

Mansell, Formula One World Champion with the Williams team in 1992 and CART champion the following year, received a massive 23% of the votes, while his closest rival was 1996 World Champion Damon Hill with a total of 13%.

McLaren driver David Coulthard did not need a title to finish equal to triple champion Jackie Stewart with 11% of the votes. The late James Hunt was next with 10%, while Jaguar driver Eddie Irvine was in ninth position with 4% and Benetton's Jenson Button rounded up the top ten with 3%.
