Minardi Deny Yoong Contract

Friday June 8th, 2001

The Minardi team have denied reports in the Malaysian press that Alex Yoong has already signed a contract to join the Italian team replacing current driver Brazilian Tarso Marques.

Malaysian Yoong, currently competing in the Japanese Formula Nippon, had reportedly signed a contract to replace Marques starting at the British Grand Prix this season on July 15.

Speaking prior to the Canadian Grand Prix, a team spokesman said. "We are constantly in discussions with promising drivers and their managers, but at this time we definitely have not signed any contract with Alex Yoong."

In recent weeks a number of different drivers have been mentioned as a replacement for the struggling Marques, including the Italian Gianni Morbidelli, but he has also denied that any serious discussion have taken place.
