In the hope of avoiding collisions like that of Jacques Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher at this year's Australian Grand Prix, the FIA has began testing brake lights in some Formula One cars, and it is thought they could be introduced next season.
The sports' governing body asked some teams to use the new system at Silverstone during testing last week, after Ferrari's technical director Ross Brawn proposed its introduction when Michael Schumacher was hit from behind in two consecutive races last season.
The system would also allow race officials to stop a driver from "brake testing" rivals. However, there are certain observers who believe brake lights would be unable to stop accidents as there is not enough time to react while driving a Formula One car.
"I don't see how it will stop any accidents," Jordan's Ricardo Zonta told Motorsport News. "It could help, but you don't really have any time anyway.
"If you are behind someone and the guy touches the brakes, and you touch them later, then you're going to hit them already, because the brakes are too good."
