Russia's Marat Safin and Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero have been nominated for the World Newcomer of the Year prize in the 2001 Laureus World Sports Awards.
U.S. Open champion Safin and Ferrero - part of the victorious Spanish Davis Cup side - are up against Australian cricketer Brett Lee, Australian golfer Aaron Baddeley and British Formula One driver Jenson Button.
The nominations were submitted by a panel of more than 300 sports journalists.
The World Sports Academy, featuring 39 top sports personalities including Boris Becker, Ed Moses, Sugar Ray Leonard and Nadia Comaneci, will elect the winners at a ceremony on May 22 in Monaco.
