Speculation about Rubens Barrichello's future with the Ferrari team is becoming more frequent every day and according to reports in the Italian press, the Brazilian driver will leave the Maranello-based outfit at the end of the year.
Roman newspaper La Repubblica claimed on Tuesday that Barrichello, who trails team mate Michael Schumacher by 22 points after five Grands Prix, will not have his contract renewed at the end of 2001, when it is due to expire.
According to the Italian daily, the favourites to replace Barrichello would be Finn Kimi Raikkonen or German Nick Heidfeld, both driving for the Sauber team this year. Both drivers have impressed so far with the Swiss team, whose cars are powered by Ferrari engines.
It is thought that Ferrari's technical director Ross Brawn has already shown interest in Raikkonen's contract with Sauber in order to lure the 21-year old, who is making his Grand Prix debut this year.
Ferrari have until August this year to exercise their option to extend Barrichello's contract.
In case the world champion team decide not to renew his contract, the Brazilian could land a drive with the new Toyota Formula One team, who are thought to have made Barrichello a very lucrative offer in order for him to join them when they make their debut in 2002.
