Williams in Rear Diffuser Row

Wednesday May 2nd, 2001

According to reports in Autosport magazine, Williams could be forced to change the design of their FW23's rear diffuser following claims from other Formula One teams saying the Grove-based outfit have found a loophole in the technical rules.

The report quotes an unidentified source from a rival team as saying, "Williams' interpretation of the regulations is to the word of the rules, but not necessarily to the spirit."

It is expected that the FIA, the sport's governing body, issue a clarification of the rules before next week's Austrian Grand Prix at the A1-Ring.

The diffuser - the upward-sloping aerodynamic device located below the rear wing - is currently one of the most important elements in a Formula One car, as it generates a great amount of downforce.
