Negotiations over the rights to publish Murray Walker's forthcoming autobiography have caused a major stir after the auction which was expected to command an advance of around £250,000 rocketed and reached a massive £1,250,000.
Legendary Formula One commentator Murray, who last year announced his retirement at the end of this season, is expected to release his autobiography in the autumn of 2002, describing his experiences over more than five decades covering motorsports.
The initial negotiations started out with a dozen publishing companies, and when the auction reached £1 million, three of them were still in the running. Eventually, Harper Collins won the auction.
Experts believe Harper Collins will benefit from what they call the "Bernie Effect", as Murray is expected to reveal all the secrets of the Formula One world.
