Neither Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher nor Benetton driver Jenson Button received the Laureus World Sports Award they both were nominated for in 2001.
At a ceremony held in Monaco, where the seventh round of the Championship will take place next weekend, several Formula One members - like McLaren drivers Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard or team boss Eddie Jordan - assisted the glamorous event.
Schumacher, who last year ended a 21-year drought for his Ferrari team by finally clinching the World Drives' Championship, was nominated for World Sportsman of the Year along with golfer Tiger Woods, Dutch swimmer Pieter van den Hoogenband, Olympic gold medalist rower Steve Redgrave and Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe. Woods was the winner.
Meanwhile, 21-year old Briton Button, who made his Formula One debut last season with the Williams team finishing in eighth position in the Championship, was nominated for the World Newcomer of the Year award, together with tennis players Marat Safin and Juan Carlos Ferrero, cricketer Brett Lee and golfer Aaron Baddeley. Russian Safin took the honours.
The Laureus World Sports Awards are designed to recognise sporting excellence, and they are held every year to honour the world's best sportsmen and women for their achievements across all disciplines throughout the world.
