Motor racing mogul Bernie Ecclestone has maintained his pole position among Britain's 500 top earners, according to the latest Sunday Times Pay List.
The newspaper on Sunday estimated Ecclestone raked in 788 million pounds in the year to October 1, garnered from his 25 percent stake in Formula One racing and from running individual races. Last year Ecclestone headed the list with 617 million pounds.
Once again, he was laps ahead of the second top-earner, financier Martyn Arbib, who earned 123 million pounds. Arbib replaced last year's runner up John Hargreaves, who runs the Matalan discount clothing empire. Matalan's plummeting share price pushed Hargreaves (6.45 million) down to 90th place.
Boxer Lennox Lewis (16 million) is ranked as the top earning sportsman, well ahead of England and Manchester United soccer player David Beckham (6.5 million) and Jaguar driver Eddie Irvine (6 million).
David Coulthard (4 million), Sir Frank Williams (3.048 million), Jenson Button (2.5 million), Adrian Newey (2.49 million), Ron Dennis (2.157 million) and Patrick Head (1.799 million) also make the list.
