Coulthard in Car Troubles in Spain

Monday November 12th, 2001

Scot David Coulthard has had his holiday road car impounded by police in the Spanish hillside village of Mijas.

The McLaren driver, who finished second in this year's Formula One World Championship, failed to re-register his Mercedes after moving it from Monaco to the Costa del Sol.

Coulthard's sister Lynsey Coulthard was driving it when she was flagged down in the hilltop village of Mijas, and after hours of discussions the police locked the £35,000 (pounds) off-roader up for six months.

Coulthard will have to pay a hefty fine as well as re-registration fees, import taxes and impound charges before it is returned. The costly mistake comes just days after fellow Briton Jenson Button suffered car troubles with his BMW, which was put into a ditch near his home in Frome by one of his best mates.
