Alesi Accepts Mercedes DTM Offer

Saturday November 17th, 2001

Frenchman Jean Alesi says he has accepted an offer from Mercedes-Benz boss Norbert Haug to drive in the German DTM championship next year.

37-year old Alesi retired from Formula One at the end of the 2001 season after competing in 201 Grands Prix and scoring only one victory in 1995 with the Ferrari team.

The veteran Frenchman tested Bernd Schneider's AMG Mercedes CLK around the short Hockenheim circuit in Germany earlier this month was said he was impressed with the performance of the car.

"No firm announcement will be made for some time, but Norbert Haug generously invited me and I am pleased to accept," said Alesi. "With over 450 horsepower they are great drivers' cars, as I discovered during my test in one at Hockenheim recently."
