McLaren to Build First Ever British Mercedes

Monday October 1st, 2001

McLaren and their partners and engine suppliers Mercedes-Benz will build a new £250,000 surpercar which will become the first British-built machine for the German manufacturer.

The Woking-based team have reached an agreement with estate agent Vail Williams in order to lease a 40,000 square feet production plant in Portsmouth, England, where the car will be built.

The new machine will include a 544hp 5.5-litre supercharged V8 engine capable of moving the car at more than 200 mph.

The vehicle, which will also incorporate Formula One features, is not the first road car built by the McLaren team, whose £600,000 three-seater became highly popular a few years ago.

The new car is planned to be available in 2003.
