Japanese driver Takuma Sato looks set to reach an agreement to drive for the Jordan team in 2002, becoming Italian Giancarlo Fisichella's teammate at the Silverstone-based outfit.
Sato, British Formula Three champion and BAR's test driver in 2001, was dropped from BAR's test team this week, and it is believed the reason is that the Japanese has landed a deal with Jordan for 2002. Sato has already tested for them at the end of last season, and team boss Eddie Jordan has admitted he is impressed by the young driver's talent.
"One thing's for sure, he is a very big talent," said Jordan. "But there are a lot of good drivers up and coming. I think there is a resurgence. If there's five or six drivers you're looking at, of course Sato would be one of them. I believe he's quick. I think if you check his record, he's won more Formula Three races than anyone in the British series before."
If Sato does join Jordan, Frenchman Jean Alesi, who currently drives for them and who has repeatedly admitted he would like to stay there in 2002, would have to look for a drive somewhere else, with the Arrows team being one of the favourites to hire him.
According to French newspaper L'Equipe, Arrows were interested in him and in German Heinz-Harald Frentzen. The daily quoted that team's commercial manager Daniele Audetto as saying: "We want (Heinz-Harald) Frentzen and Alesi in 2002".
