Premier-1, the ambitious single-seater championship for cars backed by European football clubs, has received the provisional approval from Formula One's ruling body, the FIA.
The World Motorsport Council has confirmed the sporting and technical regulations which will allow the organisers to move one step closer to their goal.
"This is a very significant step forward in the development of our plans," said Heinz Schurtenberger, chief executive of Premier-1 Grand Prix. "From its conception two years ago, we have worked very hard to get to this point in the development of our new racing series.
"It gives both us and our commercial partners the momentum required to ensure that all our objectives are achieved as proposed."
The series, which is expected to start in July 2002, is planned to feature 24 identical cars built by Italian constructor Dallara while engine builders Judd will supply V10 engines. The cars will run on slick tyres with estimated 750hp engine power.
