James Allen to Replace Walker

Thursday October 11th, 2001

ITV's pitlane reporter James Allen will replace legendary Formula One commentator Murray Walker after the 78-year old decided to call it a day this season, it was announced on Thursday.

Allen, who has been part of ITV for the past four years, had already stood in for Walker in some races this season, and the Briton admitted he felt honoured to be appointed as the succesor of "the voice of Formula One".

"It is a great honour to take on this role," Allen told ITV. "There have been many excellent commentators in other sports, but in F1 there has only been one and Murray has done it so well and for such a long time. He is a true legend.

"It is a great challenge for the same reason, but I am confident that Martin Brundle and I can take the commentary in a new direction, hopefully to a new audience - entertaining and informing as we go. I can't wait to get started."

Walker himself, retiring after more than 50 years covering motorsports, praised Allen, and was confident he would do a good job.

"He has been a trusted colleague for the last four years and I am delighted for him," Walker said. "I am sure he will be gigantically successful."
