Irish driver Sarah Kavanagh could become the first woman to drive a Formula One car since 1992 after rumours have emerged about her becoming the McLaren team's second test driver in 2002.
According to a report published by The Irish Times newspaper, the 28-year old Dubliner, who has raced in the EuroBoss championship for old Formula One cars in the past few years, completed some physical tests at McLaren's Physical Performance Laboratory and the team's managing director Martin Whitmarsh said there was "nothing in her results that suggest that Sarah could not drive a Formula One car right away."
Kavanagh, who has driven a Jordan 193 at the EuroBoss series, said driving for McLaren would be a dream that could come true soon.
"I've never had the money available to race a full championship of F3 or F3000, but what I have had has enabled me to race 90's Formula One cars for the last three years, and that's what gives me the confidence to stand up and say I can drive in F1," Kavanagh was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
"Last month, Bernie Ecclestone told me to never give up and he was right. As a huge Senna fan, it was always my dream to drive for McLaren, and hopefully that might now happen."
Italian Giovanna Amati was the last woman to try to compete in a Formula One Grand Prix but, driving for the Brabham team, she failed to qualify three times before she was sacked.
