Sato Given Permission to Race in Macau

Thursday October 18th, 2001

Japanese sensation Takuma Sato has been given special dispensation to compete in the end-of-season Formula Three Macau Grand Prix before linking up with Jordan.

Sato was unveiled as Jordan's second driver for the 2002 season in Japan last week, but he has been allowed to compete in the blue-riband event in Macau. He will run with Carlin Motorsport in the Far East and has already been installed as the favourite for the event following his domination of the British Formula Three Championship this season.

"People expected there to be a problem, but from our point of view there wasn't," team boss Trevor Carlin told Autosport magazine. "He is not a Formula One driver just yet."

Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia, the 2000 champion, chose to miss the event because of a pre-arranged test with Benetton.
