Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher managed only the 22nd best time on Saturday, as changing weather marred his qualifying run for Sunday's final round of the kart world championship.
Schumacher, who grew up racing karts and returned to his roots by entering the event in his home western German town of Kerpen, was fastest in his group on a wet circuit but the track then dried up and all the drivers in the second group were faster than him.
The German proved he had lost nothing of his kart skills by setting the fastest time in Friday's free practice with a track record in front of 1,000 delighted spectators.
World Championship leader Vitiantonio Liuzzi of Italy clocked the best time in Saturday's qualifying.
