Maserati Target Return to Racing in 2003

Thursday September 13th, 2001

Maserati will return to racing by the end of 2003 but not in Formula One, according to the president of parent company Ferrari Luca di Montezemolo.

"We want to go back in competition with Maserati but not in Formula One, because one is enough," Montezemolo told reporters in a media briefing at the Ferrari factory.

"I want to go back on the track in the second part of 2003. For sure, we will organise in 2003 a challenge championship, in other words a client championship.

"Plus we will decide, looking at many situations, at a presence in a competition not only for clients," he added. "2003 will be important for Maserati, not only for competitions but also because at the end of that year we will present a brand-new four-door designed by Pininfarina."

Jean Todt, the Ferrari sporting director who is also in charge of Maserati's motor sport activities, said options were being evaluated.

"When we have identified what we feel is best for Maserati we will make a presentation to president Montezemolo. It is something which will happen in the coming months," he said. Maserati has a glorious past in motor racing, including helping Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio to two of his five world titles in the 1950s.

"I will never forget Stirling Moss with the red Maserati and Juan Manuel Fangio. When I was a kid, Maserati for me was fantastic," said Montezemolo.
