European Minardi team boss Paul Stoddart has dismissed rumours that he is ready to drop his engine deal with Asiatech in order to use Proton power-units.
Stoddart admitted that he visited the Proton factory recently, but only on a sociable call and not to discuss business.
"Don't believe all you read," said Stoddart. "I visited Proton but only for a tour of the factory. There were quotes the next day saying we would have Proton engines. The press got carried away."
Stoddart also said he is confident of keeping his young driver Fernando Alonso next season. Alonso, who is contracted to Benetton team chief Flavio Briatore, has been linked to the Renault-powered team for 2002, but Briatore refused to elaborate on the topic.
"I think I've got Alonso for next year," said Stoddart. Briatore added: "I don't know about Alonso. It's not decided. It's too early now. We start the season in March."
