European F3000 champion Felipe Massa, who tested for Sauber last week at Mugello, is unlikely to drive for the team in 2002, sources at the team said.
The Brazilian has been linked as a possible replacement for Kimi Raikkonen, who will leave Sauber for McLaren next year. However, reports today quote sources inside Sauber who state Massa is not a candidate for Raikkonen's seat.
"Massa has tested for the team and, as far as the team is concerned, that is all," an insider was quoted as saying, adding that "no decision has been made by the team [on who will partner Nick Heidfeld] at the moment and none is expected until January."
Massa set impressive times at the team's last week's testing at Mugello, his best time just over half a second slower than Heidfeld's best of that session.
