German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz is planning to follow Renault's example and build a wide-angle V10 engine in 2002 in order to return to the top of the sport and be able to fight against Ferrari and BMW, according to reports.
The Mercedes-powered McLaren team have scored only three wins so far in 2001, compared to Ferrari's eight and Williams' four, and though the Woking-based outfit are still in second place in the Constructors' Championship, Williams are only eight points behind with two races remaining.
In order to be able to fight for the title again in 2002, Mercedes is believed to be building a new engine with a 90-degree V angle to replace this year's 72-degree unit. Though not as radical as Renault's 111-degree V10, Mercedes' new engine will be an ambitious approach.
Though there is no official confirmation from Mercedes yet, McLaren's managing director Martin Whitmarsh admitted the new engine will include significant changes.
"We do have ambitious plans, which we have to do when we're in our position," Whitmarsh was quoted as saying by Autosport.com. "We know that we can bounce back stronger. There's no magic recipe though.
"There are a number of areas of significant change, particularly in the engine configuration and there is a greater step change in the car for next year."
