Mercedes Deny Planned Switch to Paragon

Thursday April 11th, 2002

Mercedes Deny Planned Switch to Paragon Mercedes-Benz have denied that they are to move Ilmor, the company who build their Formula One engines, into McLaren's new Paragon factory to improve the performance of the team.

McLaren have struggled to match Ferrari and Williams in the opening three races and suggestions had been made that Mercedes were planning to move Ilmor from their Northamptonshire base into the new Woking facility.

It was also claimed that as part of the move McLaren would take a controlling interest in Ilmor by buying the shares of co-founder Paul Morgan, who was killed in a plane crash last year.

But Mercedes motorsport director Norbert Haug has denied the claims and told Autosport: "It's very wide of the mark." Ilmor boss Mario Ilien added: "It's totally untrue. This is the first I've heard of it."
