William driver Ralf Schumacher will introduce the latest safety feature when he wears a helmet containing a high quality image projector next season, the BMW Technology Office have said.
Images or text can be projected onto Schumacher's visor, giving him technical information and details about the race while allowing the driver to maintain full attention on the race track.
BMW Technology Office in Silicon Valley and German helmet manufacturer Schuberth have devised the display, and Schumacher will test the system during the remainder of the current season.
"With this device, BMW has taken a further important step forward on the safety front," Schumacher said.
The display has already been tested in a modified Schuberth RF-1 helmet, and the image is projected onto the dominant eye's peripheral field of vision which allows the driver to see the image without having to look at the display.
"The eye very quickly gets used to this small spot and ignores it as if it was a tiny insect on the windscreen," said project engineer Jurgen Brugl. "The image display system will mean that the driver will always know his position in the race and can receive instructions and information from the pits."
