Schumacher to Donate €1 Million to Flood Fund

Friday August 16th, 2002

Schumacher to Donate €1 Million to Flood FundWorld Champion Michael Schumacher will donate one million euro ($980,000) to a fund created to help people affected by the heavy floods in Eastern Europe.

Floods have killed nearly 100 people in Germany, Russia, Austria and the Czech Republic over the last week, after torrential rain sent a huge surge of water through river systems.

Five-time World Champion Schumacher will donate the money to a televised relief fund set up by the German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, called "Hope is the last thing to die."

"The pictures I saw made a strong impression. It is really terrible," said Schumacher in Hungary. "I am German and so I want to do something for the people who are going through difficult times right now, especially for those who are not in a financial position to deal with the situation. I want to give what I can."

The programme goes out this evening on Germany's main TV channel, ARD.
