Four British Formula One stars are set to fight it out for a seat with a newly developed Champ Car team, dubbed 'Team St George', who will race in this year's British event at the Rockingham motor speedway in September.
Former Formula One stars Johnny Herbert and Mark Blundell are believed to be in discussions with the team, run by Ray Mallock Limited, for a chance to race around the Northamptonshire oval in a one-off drive.
Grand Prix test drivers Darren Turner and Darren Manning are also being lined up for the single seat after the new team were given the go-ahead by CART bosses on Tuesday.
The US-based racing series made a successful British debut last year but the organisers have now recognised the need for a home team to draw in the fans, and any one of those names should have the desired effect.
Rockingham CEO David Grace said: "We have got some very talented British drivers who are keen to beat the Americans on our home ground. Now our job is to deliver the car and team to give them a chance of victory."
The team have been in the pipeline since July, but now have just three weeks to get their British-built Lola-Cosworth machine ready and the driver of the car will be decided at the end of this week.
