Former Formula One World Champion Mika Hakkinen will make his rally debut next month when he competes in the 2003 Arctic Lapland Rally in northern Finland.
Hakkinen, who retired at the end of the 2001 season after winning two world titles in 1998 and 1999, will drive a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution WRC2 in the event that will take place on January 24-25. The Finn will be co-driven by Arto Kapanen.
Hakkinen, however, said that the experience would only be a one-off.
"I always wanted to give it a try and I'm sure the comparison between two top disciplines as WRC and Formula One will prove interesting for the spectators as well," he said. "I want to make clear though that this is not to start a second motor sports career for me.
"Finland is not only my home country, but also the home of rallying. "I'm deeply impressed by my fellow Finns' and their colleagues' performances in WRC. Their mastering of all kind of road conditions at amazing speeds, including ice or snow, is really fascinating."
34-year Hakkinen had 20 Grand Prix victories in 161 races during his 11-year career.
