Reports in the Swiss press this weekend indicate that Peter Sauber, founder and co-owner of the Sauber team, has found a new partner to replace Red Bull in the ownership stakes.
According to Blick magazine, Sauber and Red Bull have already found a buyer and closed a deal, which will see the new investor holding a 63% stake in the team, with Peter Sauber himself retaining 37%.
Sauber himself refused to name his new partner, but did confirm the deal to the magazine. "The move is very positive," he said. "So much so, in fact, Dieter [Mateschitz, head of Red Bull] continues to show interest in a sponsorship agreement with us for 2002!"
Red Bull have announced early in the 2001 season their intentions to part ways with Sauber, after the latter refused to sign Enrique Bernoldi as the second driver, alongside Nick Heidfeld, and preferred to sign then-unknown Kimi Raikkonen. Bernoldi is heavily sponsored by the drinks manufacturer, who in turn have taken much of their sponsorship interest to Arrows.
